On Tuesday, students were given a handout about seasons, months and the school year and assigned to write more sentences for each month from April to August. This assignment will be collected on Friday. A list of kanji expressions, with pronunciations and meanings, was attached --

Grammar Lesson: Two forms of passive, examples



Handout from “A Dictionary of Basic Japanese Grammar” (pp. 362 to 369) on conjugation of the passive, with all uses, including “suffering passive” and honorific passive.
私は手紙(てがみ)を書きました。I wrote a letter.
手紙 は 私 に 書かれました。The letter was written by me.

お母さん は お皿 を 洗いました(あらいました)。The mother washed the dishes.
お皿 は お母さん に 洗われました。The dishes were washed by the mother.

お父さん は ケーキ を 食べました。The father ate the cake.
ケーキ は お父さん に 食べられました。The cake was eaten by the father.

With the –te arimasu form (transitive verbs ONLY)

私 は コーヒー を 買って います。I am buying coffee.
コーヒー は 買って あります。The coffee has been bought.

なおみ さん は 窓(まど)を 開けて(開けて)います。Naomi is opening the window.
窓 は 開けて あります。The window has been opened.

子供(こども) は 部屋(へや) を 掃除(そうじ)して います。The child is cleaning the room.
部屋 は そうじ して あります。 The room has been cleaned.

This grammar is from chapter 7 in “A Homestay in Japan.” Vocabulary test on this chapter will take place next Monday.
