JAPANESE 3 -- First period
On board:
A. Examples of invitation sentences using plain negative verbs:
1. うち へ あそび に 来ない の?
2. レストラン へ ハンバーガー を 食べ に 行かない の?
3. コーヒー を 飲まない の?
4. えいがかん へ えいが を 見 に 出かけない の?
(If you want to emphasize that this is an invitation to do something together, you can add 「 私 と いっしょ に」at the beginning of sentences 2-4 above.)
B. Changing adjectives to adverbs:
1.はやい: はやく おきて 下さい。
2.いそがしい: 母 は いそがしく お皿(さら) を 洗いました(あらいました)。
3.おそい: おそく なって すみません。
4.しずか(な): しずか に して 下さい。
(ほか の もの Or ほか に = Other things)
Example sentences:
Students brough write-ups of their interviews about reading habits and listening habits and write up the results (page 74 of handout). Some read their write-ups in class, and then all were collected
Comprehensive quiz will take place on Tuesday.
Continuing our work on uses of the plain form (besides speaking informally with your friends)
DON’T FORGET --
To go somewhere (in order) to do something:
Destination へ Or に + verb stem (just take off the ます ) + traveling verb。
Example sentences:
あさごはん を 食べ に レストラン へ 行く。
I will go to the restaurant (in order) to eat breakfast.
ホットケーキ を つくり に うち へ かえる。
I will return home (in order) to make pancakes.
本 を かえし に としょかん へ 来ました。
I came to the library (in order) to return books.
Traveling verbs: 行く、来る、かえる、出る、出かける

JAPANESE 1 – Fifth period。
Don’t forget sentence structure:
Time に Topic/subject は Destination に Traveling Verb
Time に Topic/subject は Direct Object を Active Verb
Homework is poster for family members –
Poster assignment: choose 5 family members; give information about names, ages, likes, where they went on the weekend, what they did, and how it was (6 sentences) – we wrote these sentences in class.
Students showed their posters [at least 9” by 12” (unlined paper) with an image for each of five family member, plus the 6 sentences] which was due today.
In class assignment was for each student to look at someone else’s poster and write down the information about one member of that family.
Homework:
1. Write about both classmate’s family member and own family member, resulting in 12 sentences, total. Use でも (meaning “however”) to indicate contrast. “My mother likes music. However, Bill’s mother likes sports.” でも comes at the beginning of a new sentence.
2. handout about woman doing role in Chicago in Japan – homework is one-page summary (we showed clip from NY Times website)

Family words, i.e. kinship terms:
ちち、おとうさん、おかあさん、おばあさん

あたらしい です。 あたらしかった です。Is new. Was new.
あつい です。 あつかった です。 Is hot. Was hot.
たのしい です。 たのしかった です。 Is enjoyable.

JAPANESE 2 Sixth Period
Three patterns:
__て も いい です か。 May I? Is it OK to?
はい、__て は いい です。Yes, it is OK to…。
いいえ、__て は だめ です。No, it is forbidden to…
Students too a comprehensive test on chapter 2K6 today.
After the test they were issued a handout about sentence stretching or extending a sentence by adding words appropriately. Homework was to translate the example sentences and then create another sequence by expanding a new sentence in similar ways.
Students also viewed NY Times website with information about a Broadway actress learning her part in the musical, “Chicago,” in order to perform it with a Japanese cast in Tokyo.
Additional homework assignment: write one page summary of accompanying New York Times article.

Reminder: We all must be polite in the Japanese language classroom. Not only is it important in our lives in general – it is an essential part of Japanese culture. ください、おねがい します、ありがとう、すみません Are the most important words and phrases in Japanese.

Students read NY Times article and heard audio portion from NY Times website – Broadway actress learning to perform role in musical, “Chicago” in Japanese
Tommy Y. gave his presentation Friday, April 30th. [“Presentation should be 4 minutes long – they are big topics. AP and 4th year people should supply Japanese vocabulary lists to everyone in the class. Students may speak from notes, but not from text-with-sentences.”]
