Distribution of hard copy of handout about literature-in-translation project. Very important point: DUE DATE IS MARCH 19th AND THERE WILL BE NO EXTENSIONS.

Get started RIGHT AWAY. So far, students have chosen (and received approval) as follows:

Collected sentences, all the required information about your part-time job. You may use either polite or plain forms, but you must be consistent. Then you must write out the same information for Jacob the werewolf. But do not copy the sentences below; write your own original sentences.

Part-time or temporary job for vampire 吸血鬼 (きゅうけつき)or werewolf 狼 男 (おおかみ おとこ)! We chose the werewolf.

狼 男 の 名前(なまえ) は ジェコブ です。
アルバイト は にく屋 の アルバイト です。

JAPANESE 1 – Fifth period

Handout of song, “Sakura,” which we will be singing at the beginning of class for the next couple of weeks.

Collected one-page summar of readings regarding upcoming film, “Come See the Paradise,” regarding internment of Japanese-Americans during World War II, with supplementary information about the labor movement in the U.S. and Executive order 9066.
Homework: one page summary, in sentences and paragraphs, of this material.
Don’t forget to bring your signed permission slip.

The following students performed their restaurant dialogues: Angelica G., Javier A., Jacob T., Essence H., Nadia A., Naomi LK. They used added vocabulary にがい , あまい, すっぱい、たまご、ラーメン。Don’t forget that EACH STUDENT must hand in his or her own copy of the dialogue.

BETWEEN WAITER AND CUSTOMER

Customer: Hello こんにち は
Waiter: Please sit すわって ください
Customer: Thank you. Please give me a menu. 
ありがとう。メニュー を ください。
Waiter: (Here) please (take it) どうぞ
Customer: Thank you. Nice day (good weather) isn’t it? ありがとう。いい おてんき です ね。
Waiter: Yes, that’s so. はい、そう です。
Customer (points to spot on menu): What’s this? これ は なん です か。
Waiter: (answers according to where customer points) ___です。
Customer: Is it delicious? おいしい です か。
Waiter: No, it’s yucky-tasting. いいえ、まずい です。
Customer: Really? Well, what’s this? (points to another spot on menu) そう です か。 じゃ、これ は なん です か。
Waiter: This is so-so. これ は まあ まあ です。
Customer: This is a funny/strange restaurant. What is delicious? これ は おかしい レストラン です。 なに が おいしい です か。
Waiter (pointing at one of the desserts): __________ and ________are delicious.
___と____ は おいしい です。
Customer: OK. ________ and _________ please. オッケ。___と____を ください。
Waiter (goes away and comes back with food): (here) please (take) it. どうぞ。

ものがたり story/narrative

ものがたり was narrative (with a little dialogue) about owner and guest at すごい レストラン. Students were supposed to take notes as they listened and then responded with answers to questions.

Handouts for practicing the first 20 katakana (from the college text, “Genki,” plus some rules for katakana “spelling” and a “reading” sheet, as well. This is homework.

JAPANESE 2 Sixth Period

In class, we talked through content for translation exercise below. Collected homework:

1. In spring, the weather in Karuizawa was warm.
2. Aiko {愛子} lived in Karuizawa in the spring.
3. She owned (”was raising”) pets, but she was lonely {さびしい }.
4. She was a 16-year-old princess {おひめさま}.
5. On February 14th, Aiko took a walk with her dog.
6. The dog’s name was Lady.
7. Aiko and Lady looked at the house next door.
8. In that house there were (existed) an English boy, and one handsome dog also existed..
9. The English boy’s name was William, and the dog’s name was Rupert.
10. Seventeen-year-old William and Rupert also took a walk.
11. Rupert liked Lady; but William loved Aiko.
12. William and Aiko were under the trees.
13. They were looking at the cherry blossoms and the birds.
14. The cherry blossoms were pretty and pink!
15. Aiko said, “William, I like you a lot.”
16. William said, “Aiko, I love you!”
17. The dogs said, “Wan, wan, wan!”
