Students watched next section of “Come See the Paradise,” handing in notes on vocabulary at the end of the class.
Executive Order 9022 declared unconstitutional
Crucial questions #27 and 28 on the loyalty oath Japanese-Americans were supposed to sign; Harry signed “yes” and Charlie signed “no.”

Characters so far:
Jack, Lily, Minae-chan, Harry (went into the U.S. Army), Frankie (the youngest) Charlie (sent to Tule Lake as a “NoNo boy” and then sent to Japan), Mr. Kawamura (died in the camp), Mr. and Mrs. Matsui (the tailoring shop), Mr. Ogata, Dulcie Kawamura (came back from Idaho pregnant)

After leaving the camps, Mama Kawamura and the three daughters and Minae and Frankie went to Florin, CA, because there was no home to back to in Little Tokyo (Los Angeles). While they were in Florin, the atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and the war ended. Jack, released from the army and from prison, came to join Lily and Minae-chan.

Students not ready for test that was ready for them. Also, some had been absent or sick. So we spent the class day reviewing kanji for positions, counters, and relational particles in Karuizawa story. Test will be on Monday.

1. In spring, the weather in Karuizawa was warm. はる の とき かるいざわ は おてんき が あたたかかった です。
2. Aiko {愛子} lived in Karuizawa in the spring. 愛子 は かるいざわ に すんで いました。
3. She owned (”was raising”) pets, but she was lonely {さびしい }. ペット を かって いました が さびしかった です。

Reviewed first 20 katakana flash cards. Homework is to make flashcards for first 20 katakana.


The following students performed their restaurant dialogues: Colin M., Michael C., Sergio H., Dimitri F., Keperah R., and Griffin K.. They used added vocabulary like sandwich サンド。Don’t forget that EACH STUDENT must hand in his or her own copy of the dialogue.

3-page typewritten paper (10 pt. or 12 pt. type, 1 inch margins) regarding the literary work student has chosen (and cleared with instructor)

Due Date: March 19, 2010. No extensions will be granted

Content:
Each student will write a 750 word paper of reader response (NOT a “book report”) regarding the work read, with references to his or her own ideas, life, and reading. Students may also write about what, if anything, seems Japanese from the point of view of Americans. Students should note what is surprising, and what is expected or unexpected in style or characters or story-line.
This is not a research paper about the life of the author. It is not a paper of literary analysis.
Students must be sure to use correct English grammar and correct spelling. Text must be divided appropriately into paragraphs. No more than four short quotations from the text are acceptable.
Students must consult with teacher and receive approval for their chosen books, which must be by a Japanese author. Here is a partial list of acceptable authors below.

This was the menu assignment: With a partner, design your own menu on a full-sized separate piece of paper. What do you like? What do you dislike? Your restaurant serves only foods you like. You’ll have (at least 3) categories, like food たべもの, drinks のみもの, dessertsデザート, etc., with at least 5 choices within each category. Give your restaurant a Japanese name and make your menu beautiful. Don’t forget prices in 円(えん)or ¥ (this is the international symbol). Plan for an exchange rate of 100 ¥ = $1 U.S.
