Last week there was a handout from 1 Nakama workbook, kanji writing practice　（Finishing it was a homework assignment）:

Giraffe Meets Hippo at The Unique Bakery

きりん: Look at that table over there. There’s a chocolate cake on the table.
あの　テーブル　を　見てーー　　テーブル　の　上　に　チョコレートの　ケーキ　が　あります。
かば: Oh, I like that. It’s pretty. It looks delicious, doesn’t it？
ああ、それ　が　すき　です。　きれい　です。おいしそう　
ですね。
きりん: Yes, it looks delicious. Do you want to eat that cake?
そう、おいしそう　です。あの　ケーキ　が　食べたい　ですか。
かば: Yes, I want to eat it.はい、食べたい　です。
きりん: Please eat it.　食べて　下さい。
かば: I will not eat it.　たべません。
きりん: Why will you not eat it?　どうして　たべませんか。
かば: I ate a very big cake yesterday. I can’t eat a cake today.
きのう　とても　おおきい　ケーキ　を　たべました。
きょう　ケーキ　が　食べられません。
きりん： OK. I’ll eat the cake. Is it expensive?
オッケ。わたし　は　ケーキ　を　食べます。高い　ですか。
かば： It looks expensive. 　高そう　です。
きりん： Look. It is expensive. It costs 5,000 yen. I can't buy the cake.
見てーー　高い　です。　五千円　です。
ケーキ　が　買えません。
かば： I have money.　お金　が　あります。　
（お金　を　もって　います。）
きりん： Really? Please lend me a lot of money.
ほんとう？お金　を　たくさん　かして　下さい。
かば： OK. Here’s 10,000 yen.　オッケ。一万円　どうず。
きりん： Great. I’ll buy 2 cakes. I’ll buy the chocolate cake and a banana cake.
すごい。わたし　は　ケーキ　を　二つ　買います。チョコレート　の　ケーキ　と　バナナ　の　ケーキ　を　かいます。
かば： OK. I’ll eat the number 2 cake.
オッケ。わたし　は　二ばん　の　ケーキ　を　食べます。
きりん： No, you may not eat number 2 banana cake. You ate a cake yesterday. I can eat both chocolate cake number 1 and banana cake number 2.
いいえ、二ばん　の　バナナ　の　ケーキ　と　食べて　は　だめ　です。きのう　ケーキ　を　食べました。わたし　は　一ばん　の　チョコレート　の　ケーキ　も　二ばん　の　バナナ　の　ケーキ　も　食べられます。
かば： You are selfish! わがまま　です　よ。
きりん： That’s so, isn’t it?　そう　です　ね。

We reviewed use of が for direct object when verb is in potential or with stem+たい。

Game reviewing potential and want-to forms of verbs. Review potential more tomorrow:

山田: なまえ は 山田 けんじ です。 はじめまして。

田川: わたし は 田川 けいこ です。 どうぞ
よろしく。 けんじくん は スポーツ (supootsu=sports) が すき です か。

山田: はい、 すき です。 フットボール (futtobooru=football) が すき
です。

田川: そう です か。 チーム (chiimu=team) の (relational particle meaning "belonging to, of, or apostrophe s") なんばん です か。

山田: ぼく は 十八 ばん です。

田川: そう です ね。 T・シャース (tii shaatsu=tee shirt) は じゅうはち
ばん です。 すみません。 なんさい です か。

山田: 十八 さい です。 十八 ばん は じゅうはっさい です ね。

田川: これ は なん です か。

山田: ボール (booru=ball) です。 フットボール の ボール です。

Notes: 1. 山田= "mountain field" a family name、 Yamada
2. そう です か= really?
3. 田川= "field river" a family name, Tagawa
4. そう です ね= that's true, isn't it

JAPANESE 4 and AP – Seventh period

Pages 102-103　Read and prepare to ask and answer questions as directed.
Monday discuss handout from 91/92　Resource materials: kanji and their categorizing portions, and handwritten seasonal greatings (with kanji)
Handed out to AP students the Nelson’s Compact Kanji Dictionary (still waiting for books for Jpn 4 students). Lesson on radicals (“categorizing portions”). See list of radicals inside front cover. See kanji listed by on and kun reading in index. Method of finding radical, and then finding kanji – counting strokes.. Important radicals:
9, 120, 85, 162, etc.
Each radical can be spoken as a name, either in Japanese or English

Homework: Return to handout from last Thursday – try to figure out what radical categorizes each kanji in the kanji portion.



Monday Jpn 4　and AP Japanese will look over:
90 to 93 in 2 Nakama. Arrange the manga on page 92 so that they fit the story on page 9２－９３．
