Independent Study Japanese
The class did not meet today because all three students, Rachel Barch, Rachel Schachtman, and Ryan Watkins, were scheduled to take the national tests at 8:00 a.m.

Continuation of ”Come See the Paradise” is postponed until Thursday, when we expect to have a better DVD to use, one that does not skip or freeze and that does not have a crack in it. We are expecting shipments from two sources.
Students worked on handouts showing how to write the second phonetic writing system, katakana. This is the system used to write most foreign words in Japanese. Students practiced writing the first twelve:
ア、イ、ウ、エ、オ、カ、キ、ク、ケ、コ、サ、and シ。
Sensei demonstrated stroke order using the new Hewlett-Packard “notebook” computer with its ability to project handwriting on the screen through the ceiling-mounted
Then students worked on reading the following katakana words and figuring out what the English meanings are for the following words.

Handout from Japanese in Mangaland #3, pages 20-26 , supplying information and more vocabulary for restaurant project. Class divided into two groups for two different restaurants, Todai and Kamehachi. 亀八 と 十代{?Amy will research correct kanji for Todai}
Homework: Bring art materials for creating menus for each restaurant.
Sensei will check pages 88 and 89 of workbook tomorrow.
DON’T FORGET JAPANESE-LITERATURE-IN-TRANSLATION PROJECT!!!
Amy Zhuang will do Mishima’s “The Sailor Who Fell from Grace with the Sea” for her Japanese-literature-in-translation project. Mike Sarchet will do “The Temple of the Golden Pavilion” by the same author. Francisco Tena has chosen Matsuo Basho’s “Narrow Road to the Deep North.”

Collect homework – < fashion image from ざっし、しんぶん, attached to large piece of paper with written full description of outfit worn by figure in picture.>
Pretest (from teacher’s manual for text) for comprehensive test on Chapter 5, followed by collaboration with fellow students on correct answers. Real test will take place 木曜日。
We will have a guest tomorrow, Vice-Consul Menda from the Consulate General of Japan.
Homework each student must be prepared to do a self-introduction in Japanese – at least 5 sentences (name, age, family, where student lives, free time activities, year in school, etc.)

Collect “mapping” for 5 more kanji from the chapter
Continue reading chapter 6 – explanations and translations through end of second paragraph on page 65
